Biography

I’m Sebastián, an Assistant Professor at the Data & Artificial Intelligence Initiative and the Department of Computer Science at Universidad de Chile, where I research knowledge graphs — focusing on their extraction, management, and use for querying, browsing, and AI applications. I’m also a Junior Researcher at the Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) and a Collaborating Researcher at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (CENIA).

Previously, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Computer Science at Universidad de Chile and, before that, at the Department of Computer and Information Science at Linköping University, Sweden. I completed my PhD at Universidad de Chile in 2021, proposing a self-similarity join algorithm and new similarity join and clustering operators for SPARQL. During my master’s, I created IMGpedia, a large-scale multimedia knowledge graph that took first place in the 25th Latin American Master Thesis Competition (CLEI 2017).

I sit on the Editorial Boards of the open-access journal Transactions on Graph Data and Knowledge and the Semantic Web Journal. I currently lead a Fondecyt project on knowledge graph extraction from tabular sources. My work has received several awards, including Best Paper at CoopIS 2023 and both Best Student Paper (Resources Track) and Best Poster at ISWC 2017.

News

Aug 6, 2026 My first UChile master's student defended her thesis — Valentina Esteban, co-advised with the wonderful Ivana Bachman, defended her thesis on GNN-based prediction of Autonomous System relationship types, and graduated with the highest mark! Congrats, Valentina.
Aug 4, 2026 ISWC Industry Track paper accepted — Our short article describing Maqui.ai was accepted to the Industry Track of ISWC 2026. Maqui is an IMFD start-up that helps users find and navigate the legal bodies that apply to a given problem by combining a legal knowledge graph with graph-augmented retrieval-augmented generation.
Jul 17, 2026 ISWC paper accepted — Our article froGQL: Worst-Case Optimal Joins and Type-Driven Optimization for Lightweight GQL was accepted to the Resources Track of the 25th International Semantic Web Conference. I will be presenting it in Bari, Italy, in October.
Jun 8, 2026 Fondef IDeA I+D adjudicated — Under the direction of Eduardo Graells, we will be developing Colibrí: a platform for data analysis and visualization for the Municipality of Independencia.
Jun 1, 2026 I'm joining the Department of Computer Science (DCC)! — As of today, I am joining the DCC of Universidad de Chile as an Assistant Professor. This complements my current position at the Data and Artificial Intelligence Initiative of the same university. You can read more here (in Spanish).
Mar 25, 2026 Editorial board member — I was invited to join the Editorial Board of the Semantic Web Journal. I am very honoured!
